EJ&T Proverbs 6-20: Learn from the ant, beat your children, and smite a scorner

In the Every Jot and Tittle project, I am listing all of the Bible's commandments from Genesis to Revelation, in accordance with Jesus's words in Matthew 5:18-19. I have no idea how many commandments I'll find, but Jewish tradition claims there are 613. See here for a list of those that I've found so far.

  1. If you promise to do something for a friend and then aren't able to do it, apologize immediately.
  2. My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger, Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend. Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids. Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler. Proverbs 6:1-5

105 sure-fire ways to go to hell (according to the Bible)

In a previous post, I tried to find all of the ways that a person can get saved -- according to the Bible, anyway. There were more than 200 on that list. But as I looked it over, some of the ways seemed to be more about avoiding hell than obtaining heaven. So I thought I'd start a separate list on the biblical way to go to hell. That way you can decide where you want to go after you die and know (for sure) how to get there.

So here goes. I'll add to the list as I find more ways.

  1. Hang out with strange and foolish women.
Keep thee from the strange woman ... Her house is the way to hell. 7:5-27

For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil ... her steps take hold on hell.

A foolish woman ... knoweth nothing. For she sitteth at the door of her house ... to call passengers who go right on their ways ... she saith to him, Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant. But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell. Proverbs 9:13-18

  2. Hang on a tree.
Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree. Galatians 3:13
  3. Offend the little ones.
It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones. Luke 17:2, Matthew 18:6, Mark 9:32
  4. Give yourself over to fornication and go after strange flesh.
As Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Jude 1:7
  5. Say long prayers.
Beware of [those who] make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation. Mark 12:38-40, Luke 20:46-47
  6. Defile the temple of God.
If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy. 1 Corinthians 3:17
  7. Don't feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, clothe the naked, or visit the sick or imprisoned.
Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment. Matthew 25:41-46
  8. Don't be justified by Jesus's blood.
Being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath. Romans 5:9
  9. Get rich.
But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation. Luke 6:24

Ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. James 5:1

  10. Walk in long robes, say "Hi" to people in at the store, and sit in the best seats.
Beware of [those who] walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts ... the same shall receive greater damnation. Luke 20:46-47, Mark 12:38-40
  11. Become a child of disobedience; walk in this world using the power of the prince of the air.
In time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience. Ephesians 2:2
  12. Do something offensive to angels.
The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 13:41-42
  13. Become a sinful angel.
God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell. 2 Peter 2:4
  14. Don't know God or obey the gospel of Jesus.
In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power. 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9
  15. Don't accept the free gift.
By the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. Romans 5:18
  16. Get drunk and worry about stuff; don't bother watching or praying.
And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. Luke 21:34-36
  17. Reject Jesus (the cornerstone). Then the cornerstone will fall on you (or you'll fall on it) and smash you to pieces.
Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner ... whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. Matthew 21:42-44

He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. John 12:48

Every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Matthew 3:10, Matthew 7:19, Luke 3:9

if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming ... 22. Be an unprofitable servant.
Cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 25:30
  23. Don't abide in Jesus.
If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. John 15:6
  24. Be an enemy of Jesus.
But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me. Luke 19:27
  25. Don't forgive your brother for his trespasses.
His lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses. Matthew 18:35-36
  26. Don't wear a wedding garment.
Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness, there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 22:12-13
  27. Be well fed.
Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Luke 6:25
  28. Be a false prophet or believe damnable heresies.
But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. 2 Peter 2:1-3
  29. Say some things that will get your condemned.
By thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. Matthew 12:37
  30. Enter through the wide gate.
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat. Matthew 7:13

Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them, Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. Luke 13:23-24

  31. Prophesy, cast out devils, and do wonderful things in Jesus's name, while working a bit of iniquity.
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Matthew 7:22-23
  32. Be the chaff that Jesus will burn.
He [Jesus] that cometh after me [John the Baptist] is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. Matthew 3:10, Luke 3:16-17
  33. Be the one from whom offences come.
Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh! Matthew 18:7

  36. Don't knock until Jesus shuts the door.
When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are: Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets. But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out. Luke 13:25-28

  42. Criticize Paul.
For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner? And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just. Romans 3:7-8

  51. Turn aside after Satan, learn to be idle, become a tattler and a busybody wandering about from house to house.

And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 63. Defile your whole body with your tongue.

  73. Preach another gospel besides the gospel of Paul.
But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. Galatians 1:8-9

  82. Be a reprobate.
Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates. 2 Corinthians 13:6
  83. Love your family more than Jesus.
He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Matthew 10:37
  84. Don't love Jesus.
If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema. 1 Corinthians 16:22
  85. Despise government, walk after the flesh, and lust after uncleanness.

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21
  87. Resist the powers that be.
Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. -- Romans 13:2

176 ways to get yourself saved

28 March 15: I removed some the ways to get saved (about 30 or so) that seemed more like necessary but not sufficient conditions for salvation. Some of these I included in a new post on sure-fire ways to go to hell.

I also found two new way to get saved from the book of Proverbs -- Find wisdom and find the book of Proverbs.

Fundamentalist, born-again Christians love to say that there's only one way to get saved. But if you believe the Bible, there's a lot more than that. Here are the ways that I've found so far. Let me know if I've missed any and I'll add them to the list.
  1. Say the right things.
For by thy words thou shalt be justified. -- Matthew 12:37

And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. -- Revelation 20:12-13
Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works. -- 2 Corinthians 11:15
